Adopting a Doberman through DRM

Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued Doberman Pinscher.

The adoption process involves several steps. It may seem time-consuming or unnecessarily complicated, but please understand that we have our dogs’ best interests at heart.  We strive to find the best homes possible for our dogs, as well as find the right dog for you and your lifestyle.

Requirements

All existing pets are spayed or neutered, and are up to date on vaccinations and heartworm preventative. We will check your veterinary references.

There are no children under the age of 6 living in the home.

You have a fenced area in your yard where the dog can safely exercise and relieve itself. We consider professionally installed invisible fences on a case by case basis.

The only exceptions to the fence policy is for families living in apartments or townhouses where leashed walks would be the only practical form of exercise. We will occasionally waive the fence policy for senior dogs with proven off-leash skills.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES will we place our Dobermans into a home where they will be tied up on a chain or rope, be forced to live outside or to serve as outdoor "guard" dogs.

The Adoption Process

Step 1. Complete Adoption Application

We request that you complete our online Adoption Application.  If you have difficulties filling out our online form, please contact us and we can mail you a paper version which you may return by USPS to:

Doberman Rescue Minnesota
12640 Sunnybrook Road
Eden Prairie , MN 55347

It does take us longer to process mailed applications, so please be patient.

Step 2. Home Visit

After we have received and reviewed your completed adoption application, a DRM volunteer will interview you in your home. This is NOT a “white glove” visit. The purpose of this meeting is to verify the safety of your home and yard, and to answer any questions you may have about Dobermans or Doberman Rescue, and to get a better sense of your dog handling experience and what type of dog is going to be a good fit your family and lifestyle.   You can expect that the home visit will last about an hour, and it is requested that all of the people that will be living with the Doberman be present at the meeting.

PLEASE NOTE: The adoption process CANNOT be completed until a home visit has been performed .

Step 3. Meeting the Available Dobermans

If after the home visit, it is determined that you would be a good candidate to adopt a dog from Doberman Rescue Minnesota, you will then be able to start meeting dogs.  DRM is not a large organization, so we don’t usually have large numbers of dogs available at any one time.  Sometimes it can take a few weeks or even months to find the perfect dog for you and your family.  Most of these dogs are in foster care within in the Twin City area, but occasionally we will have a dog located a bit farther out. You will be expected to travel to these homes and visit with your potential adopted Doberman. All members of the family (including any family dogs) should attend this meeting.

You are not required to adopt any of the dogs we show you. However, if you do decide to adopt a particular dog, we ask that you think about it overnight before you take the dog home. This is to avoid impulse decision making, which is sometimes accompanied by “buyer’s remorse”. Don’t worry; we won’t give “your” dog to anyone else while you’re waiting!

Step 4. Adoption Contract and Fee

Adoption Day! You will fill out an adoption contract and pay your adoption fee (see fee table below). This adoption fee serves to reimburse Doberman Rescue Minnesota for the medical costs invested in your new pet. All adoption fees should be made payable to Doberman Rescue Minnesota . Bring a leash.

There is a 2 week trial period. If you decide within the first 2 weeks of adopting your new dog that he or she isn't the right dog for you, you can return the dog for a full refund. After 2 weeks there are no refunds, but if you can't keep your dog for ANY reason at ANY time, the dog MUST come back to Doberman Rescue Minnesota .

Adoption Fees

Puppies under 8 months $400
Dogs between 8 months and 8 years $350
Dogs over 8 years $150

**PLEASE NOTE: Most of our volunteers live within 100 miles of the Twin Cities. Out-state applications will be processed on a case by case process, depending on volunteer availability.
